The Portuguese international defender strengthens Benfica's squad and is eager to start this new phase with the five-time national champions.

Freamunde, Valadares Gaia, SC Braga, and Seville. This is the journey taken by the center back before arriving at the Glorioso. The player, who said she was "super happy to wear the Sacred Mantle and represent the Club," promised to show "aggressiveness, a strong desire to win, and bring much joy to all Benfica fans" on the pitch.
The move to Spain took place in 2022/23, and now, three years later, the defender returns to Portugal and the Liga BPI, a competition she sees as “more competitive.”
"I'm proud to be back, especially at this great club. I'm really looking forward to starting the season," she explained in statements to BTV.
In addition to her joy at returning to her home country, Diana Gomes believes that joining Benfica represents the “peak of her career.” "I am proud to represent this great club, and I am sure that any Portuguese or foreign player would like to represent Benfica,“ she said, before expressing her gratitude: ”I am very happy, very proud. Thank you for taking a chance on me, I promise I will not disappoint."
The objectives for 2025/26 are to “go as far as possible” in the Champions League, as well as to continue on the path of ‘achievements’ at the domestic level – a context in which Benfica is a five-time national champion: "Continue to make history!"
With 59 senior caps for Portugal, Diana Gomes was one of 23 players representing the national team at the European Championships in Switzerland. Her great goal against Italy on matchday 2 of Group B is still fresh in the memory.
The new Benfica player sent the ball over the Italian goalkeeper, sealing Portugal's only point in the competition
Carole Costa, Catarina Amado, Andreia Norton, Andreia Faria, Lúcia Alves, Ana Borges, and Diana Silva were other international players who joined the national team, athletes with whom Diana Gomes, among others, has shared a dressing room.

This is a fact that, in the words of Paços de Ferreira's natural center back, will be “a great help” when it comes to kicking off with the eagle on his chest.
"It's definitely a big help to have been with most of the players on the national team, even just to integrate into the group. It's going to be good, it's going to be a great year," she predicted.
It should be noted that, despite being only 26 years old, the new red defender has already played in three European Championships (2017, 2021, and 2025) and one World Cup (2023).
But, in addition to the Portuguese footballers, there is another Benfica athlete with whom Diana Gomes has shared the pitch. During her first two seasons in Andalusia, Spanish international Cristina Prieto was her teammate.
"It's good to be reunited with people like Cristina Prieto, a player whose quality I know, and the person she is off the field as well. It's always good to have players like that in the squad, who give their all for the team. It will be good to play with her again," she said.
Benfica's newest player spoke of “every player's dream” of playing at Estádio da Luz, especially wearing the Benfica jersey: "I can't wait for that to happen. I hope that when it does, there will be lots of fans there to support us."
Diana Gomes wanted to assure Benfica fans of one thing: "I will give my all."
